Ubrique, a white town where leather is art, a town between two natural parks, a visual landscape luxury within the Sierra de Cádiz.
Ubrique
Ubrique is an enchanting white town whose history is hidden under the blanket of the mountains, which cover it. It has a rich past which reflects its heritage: narrow streets with a medieval layout, fountains and large houses, and the many churches of Jesus, San Antonio, San Juan de Letrán, Our Lady of the O, the Baroque Convent of Capuchinos, etc.
To better understand this historical legacy, you should go on one of the guided tours through the old town, guided by the tourist office.
Historical Corners
A tour to the upper section of Ubrique from the Convent of Capuchinos to the Plaza Colón. This itinerary will please us details and beautiful corners, such as the Fuente de los Nueve Caños, an old laundry area for the neighbourhood, the Iglesia de San Antonio (San Antonio's Church) which has been a landmark of Ubrique since the 16th century, and the impressive Peñón de la Becerra.
Between the 15th and 19th Centuries
From the Capuchinos' Convent, we start a tour immersed in history through the most representative monuments of Ubrique: the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento), the Church of Our Lady of the O (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la O), and - in the upper section of the town - we find streets where one can breathe the true Moorish air. The itinerary ends at the Plaza de Colón.
Serrano Mountains
From the Capuchinos' Convent we head for the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Town Hall Square) from which we can see the Cruz del Tajo (Cross of the Cliff), which is one of the coveted landmarks of Ubrique. After observing the Casa Solariega (Sun House) we continue to the Plaza de la Verdura, to finally rest at the Plaza del Jardín, next to the Church of Jesús.
Romantic Gorge
Beginning at the Capuchinos' Convent, this tour follows along the rocky walls, which are an integral part of the houses in the northern section of Ubrique. From Ermita del Calvario (Chapel on the Hill) one can appreciate a paronamic view of the town. Later, the visitor descends through Caracol Street and ends up at the Plaza Colón. |
